What is Pupil Premium?

Introduced in 2011, the Pupil Premium is a sum of money given to schools each year by the Government to improve the attainment of children from low-income families and some other groups. This is based on research showing that children from low-income families perform less well at school than their peers. The Pupil Premium is intended to directly benefit the children who are eligible, helping to narrow the gap between them and their peers. Is your child eligible?

Schools are given Pupil Premium for:

• Children who have qualified for Free School Meals at any point in the past six years. The school receives £1,455 for each of these pupils.
• Children who have been looked after under Local Authority care for more than one day or have left Local Authority care through adoption, a Special Guardianship Order or Child Arrangement Order. The school receives £2,530 for each of these pupils.

What is Recovery Premium?

Recovery Premium is part of the government’s package of funding to support pupils whose education has been impacted by COVID-19. It is a time-limited grant providing over £300 million of additional funding for state-funded schools in the 2021/22 academic year and £1 billion across the 2022/23 and 2023/24 academic years. Recovery Premium is provided for children eligible for Pupil Premium as these pupils are deemed to be affected additional impact of the pandemic on these students. The school receives an additional £145 per eligible pupil per year.
