History
Within our History curriculum, children will acquire and develop appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum History Programmes of Study, making links to local history where relevant and developing a secure understanding of York’s rich and varied history.
Across the school, children will be taught about various historical events, where they take place within a historical timeline and famous historical figures, some of which have shaped the world today. Where appropriate, we will use historical artefacts, visitors, workshops and visits to excite and intrigue our children to find out more about events and people from the past. Questioning and inquiry will lead our teaching and teachers will encourage and guide children to make connections between ideas, historical themes and events, with reference to prior learning throughout. Teachers will use Knowledge Organisers, including key vocabulary, as an aid to help pupils learn key facts and significant events.
Our curriculum offers a range of exciting units that each has an overarching key ‘enquiry’ question to delve into. In EYFS children explore the ‘past’ and the idea about recalling what has already happened. In KS1, children think deeper about ‘time’ and what it means to them. They think about living memory and compare to experiences of their parents/grandparents and then learn about some memorable events in History. In KS2, children study a range of time periods in chronological order and create links to prior learning and comparisons to create depth in their understanding.
