JIGSAW PHSE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education)

For teaching Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Clifton Green Primary School uses the JIGSAW PSHE Scheme of Work. It provides a structured, whole-school approach in which every year group studies the same theme at the same time, with content carefully adapted to each age and developmental stage.

The programme is designed to build children’s emotional literacy, resilience and social skills, while fully meeting statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education (RSHE) in England.

The Six “Puzzles” (Units)

The curriculum is divided into six half-term units, known as “Puzzles”:

  • Being Me in My World – Focuses on self-identity, belonging, rights and responsibilities.
  • Celebrating Difference – Explores diversity, inclusion, empathy and anti-bullying.
  • Dreams and Goals – Encourages perseverance, goal-setting and aspirations for the future.
  • Healthy Me – Covers physical health, mental wellbeing, healthy lifestyles and safety.
  • Relationships – Examines family relationships, friendships, conflict resolution and online safety.
  • Changing Me – Addresses puberty, human reproduction, life cycles and transition to new year groups or secondary school.

Spiral Curriculum

Jigsaw follows a spiral curriculum model, meaning each theme is revisited every year and explored in greater depth as children mature. This ensures key knowledge and skills are reinforced and developed progressively throughout primary education.

Mindfulness Approach

Jigsaw is widely recognised for embedding mindfulness into every lesson. Each session includes a “Calm Me” activity designed to help children regulate emotions, improve focus and develop self-awareness before engaging in learning.

Right to Withdraw

Under current statutory guidance in England:

Relationships Education (primary) and Health Education are compulsory subjects — parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from these elements.

Parents do have the right to withdraw their child from the sex education components of PSHE that go beyond the statutory national curriculum for science.
