Teaching is designed to embed the Character Virtues into the life and work of the school and its’ safeguarding curriculum, so that every child experiences the diversity and safety of ‘life in all its fullness’.
Character Virtues will be reinforced everywhere, on the playing fields, in classrooms,
corridors, interactions between teachers and pupils, in assemblies, leadership messages
and communications, staff training, and actions.’
They will be:
Caught…through our positive school community, formational relationships and ethos.
Taught…through the curriculum using teaching and learning strategies, activities and
resources.
Sought…through chosen experiences that occur within and outside of the formal curriculum.
A rigorous evidence informed teaching strategy develops learners’ ability to think about
thinking (metacognition) and develop their confidence as communicators and their love of
learning. We work to ensure that our learners keep safe and remember in the long term, the content they have been taught and to integrate new knowledge into larger concepts and apply it in a range of contexts.
We ensure that our children develop the mental processes essential for learning, including
holding information in mind, self-control of attention, and shifting focus between tasks
(Executive Functioning).
There is a clear focus on ensuring children can read to learn, rather than just learning to
read, as well as reading for pleasure and have the number fluency for advanced
mathematics. We work to get the basics right to prevent gaps from widening, involving high-quality adult-child interaction, direct instruction of the fundamental skills and a well-sequenced curriculum. Subject matter is presented clearly, promoting appropriate discussion and thinking about the subject matter being taught.
Teachers check learner’s understanding systematically, identify misconceptions accurately
and provide clear, direct feedback, adapting teaching as necessary to meet need.
