What Year 3 Children Will Experience

In Year 3 at Clifton Green Primary School, our Cultural Capital offer builds independence, resilience and a deeper understanding of our local environment. As children move into Key Stage 2, we provide opportunities that develop responsibility, teamwork and curiosity about the wider world.

Through outdoor learning, local exploration and hands-on experiences, pupils strengthen both their knowledge and character.

Exploring Our Local Area

Being located in the historic city of York provides rich opportunities for meaningful learning beyond the classroom.

Our Year 3 experiences include:

  • Studying the local area – developing geographical fieldwork skills and understanding how our community is organised.

  • Going on a bus tour of York – learning more about the city’s landmarks and history while developing confidence using public transport.

  • Litter picking in the local community – understanding environmental responsibility and active citizenship.

  • Studying plants at Homestead Park – observing plant life, habitats and seasonal change within a local green space.

Outdoor Learning and Life Skills

Year 3 pupils begin to develop greater independence through practical outdoor experiences.

  • Making a campfire – learning about fire safety, teamwork and outdoor responsibility in a controlled environment.

  • Learning to tie a range of knots – developing practical problem-solving skills and resilience.

  • Camping under canvas – building confidence, cooperation and independence through shared outdoor experiences.

Inspiring Curiosity in Science

  • Visiting Wonderlab at the National Railway Museum – engaging in hands-on scientific investigation and exploration through interactive exhibits.

Why Cultural Capital Matters in Year 3

In Year 3, Cultural Capital means:

  • Developing independence and resilience

  • Strengthening teamwork and leadership skills

  • Building environmental awareness and responsibility

  • Expanding knowledge of our local community

  • Encouraging curiosity through real-world scientific exploration

These experiences help prepare our pupils for the increasing challenges of Key Stage 2 while creating lasting memories and meaningful learning opportunities.
