What Year 4 Children Will Experience

In Year 4 at Clifton Green Primary School, our Cultural Capital offer builds upon the independence developed in lower Key Stage 2. Through historical exploration, residential experiences, environmental responsibility and practical life skills, pupils deepen their understanding of the world and their role within it.

Exploring History and Heritage

Located in the historic city of York, Year 4 pupils benefit from first-hand experiences that bring learning to life.

Our historical and cultural visits include:

  • Visiting the Yorkshire Museum to study the Romans – exploring artefacts and developing an understanding of Britain’s past.

  • Visiting the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall – learning about trade, local history and York’s medieval heritage.

  • A Christmas visit to Clifton Parish Church – understanding Christian traditions and reflecting on the meaning of celebration within the community.

Outdoor Learning and Residential Experiences

Year 4 pupils are given opportunities to develop resilience, teamwork and independence through outdoor challenges.

  • Staying overnight at a youth hostel at Boggle Hole – building confidence, cooperation and responsibility away from home.

  • Sailing on a boat – developing water confidence and teamwork skills.

  • Visiting a wildlife park at Askham Bryan Wildlife & Conservation Park – learning about conservation and animal care.

  • Improving a patch of land in our area – contributing positively to our local environment.

Practical Skills for Life

Year 4 Cultural Capital also focuses on developing essential life skills:

  • Designing, making and flying a kite – applying creativity, design and problem-solving skills.

  • Sewing on a button – developing independence and practical self-care skills.

  • Planting it, growing it and eating it – understanding sustainability and where food comes from.

Why Cultural Capital Matters in Year 4

In Year 4, Cultural Capital means:

  • Deepening historical understanding through real artefacts and locations

  • Developing independence through residential experiences

  • Building teamwork and resilience through outdoor challenges

  • Strengthening environmental responsibility

  • Gaining practical skills that support everyday life

These rich and varied experiences ensure our pupils continue to grow as confident, capable learners who understand both their heritage and their responsibility within the wider world.
