What EYFS Children Will Experience

At Clifton Green Primary School, we believe our youngest learners should experience the world around them in meaningful, memorable ways. In EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), we build Cultural Capital by giving children real-life experiences that broaden their knowledge, confidence and understanding of their community and beyond.

Through carefully planned visits, activities and enrichment opportunities, our children explore, discover and grow.

Exploring Our Local Community

We are proud to be part of the wonderful city of York. Our children regularly explore the rich history, nature and community around us.

Our Local Adventures Include:

  • Exploring Clifton Wood – discovering wildlife, seasonal changes and the natural environment.

  • Visiting Clifton Parish Church – learning about local traditions and places of worship.

  • Reading a book at Clifton Library – developing a love of stories and understanding how libraries work.

  • Visiting a care home – building empathy, kindness and connections with older generations.

  • Following the Foss Fairy Trail – enjoying imaginative outdoor exploration.

  • Visiting York Minster – experiencing awe and wonder in one of the world’s most famous cathedrals.

Hands-On Experiences

We believe children learn best by doing. Our EYFS pupils enjoy practical experiences that spark curiosity:

  • Exploring a local farm – learning where food comes from and meeting animals.

  • Raising tadpoles – observing life cycles first-hand.

  • Picking fruit to eat – understanding healthy choices and where food grows.

  • Toasting a marshmallow – developing confidence and learning about fire safety in a supervised environment.

  • Having a picnic – practising social skills and enjoying shared experiences outdoors.

Expressing Ourselves

Creative and performance opportunities help children develop confidence and communication skills:

  • Performing on a stage – building self-belief, speaking skills and resilience.

  • Sharing stories and role play – encouraging imagination and language development.

Why Cultural Capital Matters

In EYFS at Clifton Green Primary School, Cultural Capital means:

  • Giving children experiences beyond their immediate home life

  • Helping them understand their local community

  • Building vocabulary through real-life experiences

  • Developing confidence, curiosity and independence

  • Creating lasting memories that inspire future learning

By the time our children leave EYFS, they have explored nature, history, faith, performance, community and the wider world — right here from the heart of York.
