At Clifton Green, reading is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to
ensuring that all children become fluent, confident readers who enjoy and understand
what they read.
Phonics
In the early stages of reading, we teach phonics using the Little Wandle Letters and
Sounds revised programme to ensure all children make a strong start.

Phonics is taught daily in Early Years and Key Stage 1 through clear routines, precise
modelling and consistent practice. The programme is highly inclusive, with regular
assessment and immediate support, ensuring that all children keep up.
Children read carefully matched fully decodable books, enabling them to apply their
phonics knowledge with confidence and develop early fluency.
For pupils who need additional support, timely and targeted interventions ensure no
child falls behind.
Developing Reading
We prioritise reading for both meaning and pleasure, ensuring that all children read widely, think deeply and develop a lifelong love of books.
Reading extends across the wider curriculum. High-quality texts are used to enrich learning in subjects such as history, geography and science, helping children to build knowledge, develop language and make meaningful connections.
