At Clifton Green Primary School, the Humanities team are responsible for leading the National Curriculum subjects of Geography, History, Religious Education (R.E.) and Spanish (KS2 Modern Foreign Language).

Geography

At Clifton Green Primary School, learning in Geography intends to instil a love of the subject in all of our children to inspire curiosity and a fascination about the world and its people. We aim to equip children with an understanding of diverse places, people, resources and environments around them. We place importance upon helping children to become geographers: thinking and acting as geographers do, asking questions, discussing and investigating the topics covered.

Children’s geographical learning starts in EYFS and Key Stage with spaces children are familiar with and slowly builds outwards, from York, to the UK, to Europe, South America and the Arctic and finally global issues in Upper Key Stage Two. In order for the children to know more and remember more in each area of geography studied and to develop links between each topic, we implement a curriculum, inline with the National Curriculum, that is progressive.

We take an enquiry-based approach to teaching Geography with each unit of work focusing upon a key question to guide teaching and learning. Teachers are encouraged to consider opportunities available to use the school grounds and the local area for fieldwork. Children will have the opportunity to collect and analyse data, interpret geographical information (maps, globes, climate data etc.) and to communicate their knowledge in a variety of ways. Children will be encouraged to explore their own environment and teachers challenge pupils to make connections between their local surroundings and that of contrasting settlements, developing their understanding of both human and physical processes.

History

Within our History curriculum, children will acquire and develop appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum History Programmes of Study, making links to local history where relevant and developing a secure understanding of York’s rich and varied history.

Across the school, children will be taught about various historical events, where they take place within a historical timeline and famous historical figures, some of which have shaped the world today. Where appropriate, we will use historical artefacts, visitors, workshops and visits to excite and intrigue our children to find out more about events and people from the past. Questioning and inquiry will lead our teaching and teachers will encourage and guide children to make connections between ideas, historical themes and events, with reference to prior learning throughout. Teachers will use Knowledge Organisers, including key vocabulary, as an aid to help pupils learn key facts and significant events.

Our curriculum offers a range of exciting units that each has an overarching key ‘enquiry’ question to delve into. In  EYFS children explore the ‘past’ and the idea about recalling what has already happened. In KS1, children think deeper about ‘time’ and what it means to them. They think about living memory and compare to experiences of their parents/grandparents and then learn about some memorable events in History. In KS2, children study a range of time periods in chronological order and create links to prior learning and comparisons to create depth in their understanding.

Religious Education (R.E.)

At Clifton Green Primary School, learning in Religious Education intends to ensure that children are able to understand and talk about the religious and non-religious worldviews that have shaped the local area of Clifton, York,  Great Britain and the world so that they are able to understand one another’s life choices and way of life. Therefore, they will be able to show tolerance and respect and an appreciate of diversity so that they will flourish as citizens. They will also be encouraged to ask questions and develop their own thinking in order to make sense of their own place in the world.

Within RE, children will follow the York Agreed Syllabus and Scheme of Work which allows for a progressive, balanced and broad curriculum and enables the development of substantive knowledge, ways of knowing and personal knowledge. It is a curriculum designed with a vast amount of substantive knowledge in the autumn term which is then used and developed later in the year in other units. Learning is introduced in one year group and then developed the next allowing for retention of knowledge.

We have developed links with York Schools and Youth Trust (YoYo), our local churches, Islam Learner Services and the local Mosque. We use collective worship to offer a reflective space for all children to develop their understanding and response to key themes and ideas.

Modern Foreign Languages – Spanish

Pupils in Key Stage Two enjoy a weekly Spanish lesson lasting between 30 and 45 minutes. Our teachers are supported by a specialist, native Spanish Teacher called Louise, who uses high-quality resources to plan and teach engaging lessons. Learning in Spanish intends to expose our pupils to a new language in order to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. We value the importance of understanding the wider world and our curriculum helps children develop an awareness of cultural differences in other countries. We aim to ignite a passion for languages and equip pupils with language learning skills that will provide a solid foundation for future language learning.

Spanish is taught in line with National Curriculum aims and is carefully designed so all units of learning are sequenced to integrate new knowledge into larger concepts and to progressively develop skills in Spanish in four key areas of learning: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

A variety of techniques are used to encourage children to have an active engagement in the foreign language learning including games, role-play, specific learning resources and songs involving actions. A focus is placed on developing children’s pronunciation and accent also.
